Great Travel Camera I bought this camera the week before we left on a Mediterranean cruise. I was looking for a camera that was small enough to carry in a pocket, yet not so small I would have to put on my glasses everytime I used it. The 10X tele lense was also a drawing card, as we would be doing a lot of touring and taking some shots at a distance. The camera arrived 5 days before we left, and I reviewd the manual on the plane flight. This proved enough as the camera operation was intuitive and easy to follow. We enjoyed this camera from the first photo to the last (about 380 pictures). It took great pictures, and the auto focus and face recognition worked great most of the time. The 3 most common adjustments, zoom, backlight compensation, and force flash off are convenient and quick to select. I took a lot of flash off photos (inside museums) and the pictures were surprisingly good. The telephoto was invaluable in recording some of the landscape and architectual details of buildings. I rarely used any setting other than the intelligent auto, and it took care of most scenes with great clarity and exposure. I took several videos and found them acceptable. This is where I found the only negative: the zoom apparatus makes a bad squeeking sound as recorded on the video. Sounds like a slow moving rusty door. We met several other passengers who had the same camera and everyone thought it was great. It got a little damp in Naples and Rome where it rained most of the day. However, it never missed a beat or presented a moisture problem. Overall, I am very impressed and will use this camera over my Nikon D50 for most casual situations.

Great camera for the money and then some This camera is a tough one to knock in any way. Right out of the box it is a pleasure to use. The photos are sharp if taken properly. Now for those who have knocked the fact that the lens cap comes off easily. First of all that is to protect the zoom mechanism. This can be eliminated by purchasing a LA-DC58E Conversion Lens Adapter for the camera. Not only does it allow a better hold on the camera for zooming it also lets you put on a haze or UV filter to protect your lens. A secure 58mm lens cap would then be used to protect the filter and lens. Not much of a big deal for such a fine camera. You would have to pay a great deal more and probably not ever use all the extras that a SLR might have over this camera. Great deal for the money!

What's the best reason for buying a digital camera? They say, there are only two big reasons why people buy anything. The first is to avoid pain, and the second is to gain pleasure. Assuming that your not considering buying a Canon PowerShot A460 Digital Camera to avoid pain, let's consider what pleasure could be gained from buying the A460. The pleasure of capturing life's memorable moments for posterity. The pleasure of creating art with the perfect shot of a sunset over the Misty Mountains. The pleasure of showing off your brilliant photography to all your admiring friends. Before we get too far Zen though, there are some things you should know before you rush off to buy a Canon A460.

The A460 looks like a bit of a throw back to my original digital camera. A Canon PowerShot S40 (circa 2001). The small LCD 2 inch LCD screen, and the sliding lens cap / power switch are almost identical designs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I still use my S40. It's got some nice features that seem to be missing on many of todays digital cameras. Decent rechargeables, and a solid / sturdy feeling body. The one thing that has changed over the years, is image quality.

Considering, that the A460 only goes to a maximum of ISO 400, you would think that photos taken would be fairly noise free. In reality, image noise seems to be a step behind the competing products. ISO 100 images from the PowerShot A460 seem like they were shot at 200 or 400 setting. Things have improved over the years with image noise reduction in most camera models, but unfortunately the A460 hasn't quite kept up.

Another piece of new technology missing from the A460, is image stabilization. Image stabilization is pretty common fare on even the most basic of digital cameras these days. It's nice for anyone with shaky hands. Even for those with a rock solid grip, image stabilization can make the difference between a perfect shot, and one that's just a bit too blurry even for PhotoShop.

If your still intent on buying a PowerShot A460, here's a couple other considerations to keep in mind:

- flash recharge time is excruciatingly slow
- the zoom control buttons are shared with other functions
- movie are shot at 10 fps VGA or 30fps at QVGA
- a bit too big to fit in your pants

If I was feeling a bit nostalgic, I might just buy a Canon A460 for the right price. Otherwise, I'd have to take a pass. If I was writing this piece a few years ago, my recommendation might be different. But I'm not. Fear not though gentle reader, as there are more digital cameras at great prices available then your dog could shake a stick at. Keep looking, you'll find value for your money.

The Canon Powershot S5 IS is an excellent point-and-shoot digital camera with one huge drawback. It's BIG. It's not small and convenient like a G9 or a Powershot SD. Forgoing the ultimate in portability is a huge sacrifice. Is it worth it? Is it worth leaving the world of pocket-sized cameras behind? Resoundingly, yes.

Now anyone can read the specs on these cameras and compare features. I'd like to relay my real life experience with the Canon Powershot S5 IS and explain the most impressive and valuable features of this fine digital camera. Also I hope to highlight its ease of use and superb results.

Photo Quality

Since I own a tiny Canon Powershot S410 Digital ELPH (like the current Canon SD400), I am familiar with the shortcomings of these little cameras: picture quality. Especially indoor shots. Peculiar skin tones or ultra-white faces are common. My experience with the S5Is has simply proven to me the superior picture quality of the camera over the smaller powershots. Granted, for even better picture quality I could go with an SLR like the Canon EOS, but I'm too cheap and lazy to invest in that type of camera. It's much more expensive and more difficult to use. I value ease of use and I enjoy spending a lot less money!

Superior Flash

Certainly part of the reason for the superiority of the picture quality of my S5 is the superior flash. The S5 flash is just a better quality than the embedded, minuscule flashes in the tiny Canon SD powershot cameras. The S5 flash is larger, it pops up, and it centered above the lens. I suspected this flash would be superior, and after using this camera for several months I can conclude it is! Additionally, you can use an external flash if you so desire. You can't do that with the smaller Canon SDs (although you can with the G9.) Regardless, an external flash is not necessary because the built in flash gets the job done.

12x Zoom

That's 12x optical zoom! The small cameras can't compete with that. And the pictures at full zoom are spectacular.

Super Macro Mode

Do you want to get close? Do you want to get really close? Essentially with Super Macro Mode you can get as close as 0cm away from your subject. That's right. Your lens can literally be touching the object you are photographing. You cannot do that with a G9 or an SD. And, it's really easy to use. You simply put the camera in program mode and hold in the little flower button at the base of the lens. The camera tells you you're in Super Macro Mode and you just shoot normally, just extra close. The S5 manual hardly mentions regular macro mode; it jumps right to super macro mode. Well that's because super macro mode rocks! Get ready insects and other tiny stuff; I'm gonna take your picture!

Excellent Video Capability

Besides taking superb pictures, the Canon S5 IS is an excellent video camera as well. Its features can compete with many features of high-priced camcorders. There are some great textbook features like Long Play Mode, variable frame rates (15 fps, 30 fps and 60 fps), and stereo sound with noise suppression. But let's hear about the juiciest and coolest video features.

Firstly, you can optically zoom while shooting video. Optically zoom, not digital zoom. Digital zooming is crummy because the picture gets grainy as you zoom. In my mind that kind of ruins the video you are shooting. Smaller Canon digital cameras like the G9 and the SDs do not optically zoom while shooting video. If you're comparing another camera to the S5, this may be a deciding factor. A 12x optical zoom while shooting video is extremely useful!

Secondly, the S5IS has a dedicated movie button. What is that? Well it means you don't have to futz around trying to switch to video mode when some video-worthy event starts to occur. This is great for those parents with active young kids! This make the S5 feel more like a regular video camera. When you want to take video, just hit the record button like you would on a camcorder like the ZR850. Of course the button is located for quick access - no fancy hand grips though.

The third impressive video related feature of the S5 is the Photo In Movie feature. This feature allows you to snap a picture while you are shooting video. It's nice to have photo highlights of your favorite videos. Unfortunately with this feature, the video is interrupted with the still picture. So when you are playing back the video, it freezes at the point the picture is taken. Remember though, other powershots don't even have this feature.

The Canon S5 is a feature-packed point-and-shoot with superior picture quality and video capability. Perhaps even more impressive is its price range, it's cheaper than any of the current Canon Powershot cameras on the market right now and significantly cheaper than the popular G9. For a photographer seeking high quality photos, ease of use, and modest price, the S5 is a winner.

Never may be too harsh a word, but you'll want to learn of a few problems with the Canon PowerShot SD850 Digital Elph Camera before you actually buy one. It has some flaws you may not be aware of. Most digital camera reviews you read online are nothing but thinly veiled attempts to sell you the camera. There's no sales pitch here, just an attempt to bring to light problems with the Powershot SD850 Digital Elph.

Barrel distortion can be common with several cameras in this category and price range, but generally not to the extent that it is in the SD850. Barrel distortion in photography generally refers to an image whose quality is good at the center, but gets distorted the further you go from center. Barrel distortion is sometimes referred to as edge or corner softness.

Canon decided that giving you information you can't do much about, might be a good idea. Not really sure why. When the shutter button is half way pressed, the PowerShot SD850 displays the F/Stop setting the Digital Elph will be using for the picture your about to take. Which is nice, but it would be even nicer if you could adjust it. The way it's designed right now, you can't.

Ergonomics are important in digital cameras, especially because of their size. Being so small, digital cameras can be cumbersome even at the best of times. Especially for those with larger hands. The PowerShot SD850 seems to have missed the mark with a couple of points in this category. Firstly, the power button is positioned in such a way that getting greasy finger prints on the LCD is next to impossible. Secondly, due to a curved base, the SD850 DigitalElph can be tricky to set on a flat surface for the purpose of using the timer.

That's just a few points you should keep in mind if your considering a Canon PowerShot SD850 Digital Elph Camera. Lucky for you, there are plenty of other good digital cameras to consider. Good deals on digital cameras are plentiful these days, if you just know where to look.

Great photography at a great price! For an everyman's digital camera, we have been very impressed with the detail, color, and quality of the photos it delivers. For the price, and after doing some serious comparison shopping, we feel this was a real bargain.

Love this camera I bought this camera to replace an aging Powershot A40 that I bought several years ago. I wanted something easy to use, somewhat small, good picture quality and some macro capability. This camera had it all. The macro mode has been unbelievable. It is able to focus and shoot a lot closer than I will ever need and still gets really good quality.

Canon A720IS A great camera for the money and my needs! Does everything a good camera should do and does it well. Love the special effects, the sepia mode makes some great looking photos with that old time look. The Movie Mode works real well, though the sound is a bit muddy, but this is not a video camera after all. The viewing LCD is bright and larger that my other digicams screens. The controls are well placed and intuitive (for me, anyway). It is far lighter than my 8 year old 1.3mp Olympus, and takes pictures much faster. The 6X optical zoom is a great improvement over the usual 3-4X zoom found on most digital cameras in this price range. I am very happy so far with my purchase. The Cons: 1- Short battery life! Take along extras! It is nice that it takes easily available AA batteries, though. 2- It seems to have a fairly long flash recharge time. I have found myself shooting back-to-back shots and often the flash is not ready, yet. Not a big problem, but I have to remind my self to be more patient between shots, at least for a few extra seconds. 3- Memory card that ships with the camera (16 megs) is WAY too small for an 8 mega pixel camera, maybe 8-10 shots. Buy a 1gb card or bigger when you purchase the camera. You are going to need it and memory is cheap right now! Overall I would give the Canon 4 1/2 stars if that was an option.

I love the Sony Cybershot DSCW200 12.1MP Digital Camera although with any new technology you have to learn to use it because it does so much that you have to stay on top of the settings for every picture you take, like the macro for close ups, display settings and light. One thing I have learned is that you can forget taking action shots.The delay is way slow. In my case I tried to catch my son's hand raised after a wrestling match win and the delay of 1 1/2 seconds is just enough to miss it. Other moving shots are a blur unless I'm doing something wrong. Seems like every pic with the flash has a red eye in it no matter what color the eyes are and the red eye reduction doesn't really do anything. You can edit the red eye out easily but my daughters blue eyes are now gray. You would think they would have a color option. I set the light setting on low light (iso)without the flash and the stills are perfect, so forget the flash and you'll have no red eye issues. Great for just carrying around and the $40. magnetic lid belt attachable case should be free. Obviously you need a digital camera now adays for ebay and e-mailing pics but my old minolta 3xi (sold on e-bay) w the zoom took reliable pics but was to big to be practical now. Of course I probably would have paid for my new camera in film, battery and developing by now. So all in all with the xtra 4mp card, case and tv docking station you'll be in for over $500. Of course now the camera is under $300 2 weeks after I buy it but a 5mp camera used to be $700 so I'm still happy. Sony does sell an optional optical zoom (4" length)that you need an attachment for and will run you another $200. But there goes the whole reason for getting a compact point and shoot. I have a 60" 1080p tv and am dissapointed in the quality of the high def docking station. I am using the hi-def cable but it's just not as good as it can be but it's cheap enough and on a smaller tv it will be a lot better. Little movies are cool to e-mail to your friends too.

THE BEST VIDEO SHOTS COME IN A TINEY CAMERA No one could create better video for the price without using Canon's SD750 digital camera. Place it in your pocket...wear it around your neck...or just take it out of its case and turn to the video mode. Looking for a new, light-weight digital camera to snap those candid shots of your friends and family? Looking for a digital camera with a great amount of megapixels? What about a camera that's small enough to toss in your purse or pocket? Then look no further! The Kodak EasyShare Z885 digital camera may just be the camera for you.

For years I've been carrying around a camera that use to be top of the line back in 2004. Unfortunately, a 3.1 megapixal camera is no longer top of the line, so I wanted something better. I received just that for Christmas 2007-- my EasyShare Z885!

While this camera is perfect for me, it may not be perfect for everyone. There are a few pros and cons to this camera and how it functions. Here are the ones that I felt were most important.

PROS:

The amount of megapixels in this camera helps you create some of the most beautiful, crisp, and clean images ever. At 8.1 megapixels, you won't have to worry about not being able to see the blue eyes of your child or the lovely sunset behind the mountain peaks. Your photos will come out just as lovely as the moment they were taken.

One of my favorite features on this camera is the Undo Delete selection. Have you ever accidentally deleted something that you wanted to keep? All you could do was regret the mistake and move on, but not anymore! The Kodak EasyShare 885 has an Undo Delete selection that will allow you to immediate reverse an accidental deletion. This feature could be a lifesaver!

My all-time most favorite feature on the Kodak EasyShare Z885 is that it has the ability to zoom in and out DURING video recording. I love that! My old camera would only allow you to zoom before and after recording a video -- not during. So I was thrilled to find that the new Z885 did this. What a wonderful thing for those of us who love to take family videos.

The Z885 is a lovely looking camera. It has a lightweight, sleek design that makes the camera easy to take along anytime. This camera will fit into your purse, coat pocket, and even your pants pocket. It comes equipped with a large, 2.5 inch, color, viewfinder screen.

CONS:

My main complaint about the Kodak EasyShare Z885 is that there isn't a traditional viewfinder. The color screen is the only thing that you can use to line up your shots. This isn't really a big deal until you are outside on a bright, sunny day and you can't see a thing on the screen.

This camera has so many features and functions that it eats AA batteries like they are camera candy. I usually use CRV-3 batteries in my digital cameras, but the Kodak EasyShare Z885 came with two AA digital camera batteries. Well, those batteries were dead in a matter of a week. I've had the camera for about two months now and I've gone through four sets of two since those that came with the camera. I will be purchasing a new CRV-3 for my Kodak EasyShare Z885.

This last con is more of an annoyance. The Kodak EasyShare Z885 does not come with the AV-TV cable that is used to attach the camera to your television. My old Kodak EasyShare came with this cable, and I used it often. But, the new Z885 does not; you'll have to order one from the Kodak website or I've found quite a few of them on eBay.

In the end, the Kodak EasyShare Z885 is an all-around great camera. It's great for the point-and-shoot photographers among us. But, it's also great for those of us who like a little freedom in our photography. This camera has loads of options and a lot of ways for you to create just the image that you want. You'll want to watch your battery usage, stay out of the glaring sunlight if you want to see the screen, and spend a little more money if you want to hook the camera to your television.

I do love my camera, and I'm thrilled with the photo quality it gives me, but with the $200 price tag I probably would have looked a little closer at other cameras if I had known what I know today.

Buy a Sony Cybershot DSCW80 vs Buy a Canon Powershot SD1000

Having a hard time deciding between a Sony Cybershot DSCW80 and a Canon Powershot SD1000? Don't worry, your not the first. They're both excellent cameras with some excellent features. Some features that distinguish them are worth serious consideration, and some are just marketing hype. Let's take a closer look, and sort out the fact from fiction.

Lets start off first with the similarities between these two cameras. These features basically cancel each other out, and are a non issue. First of all price. At the time of writing, both these cameras were in the same price bracket of about 150-200 dollars. While you may find a 10 or 20 dollar savings between one or the other if you shop around, it's really not worth fretting over. Both have approximately the same number of megapixels. 7.2 for the Sony Cybershot DSCW80 and 7.1 for the Canon Powershot SD1000. That's a wash. Both the Sony and the Canon fall into the ultra-compact category, with all the inherent pros and cons that go with that design. Optical view finders are common to both cameras. That's great especially for the Canon which I'll explain shortly. Face detection technology is one of those new features, that sounds real cool, but still has yet to prove it's usefullness (at least to this photographer). Useful or not, both the Cybershot and the Powershot have it.

Now on to the serious stuff. What are the features that set these two digital toys apart. First of all, and in my mind the most important from a usability stand point is burst mode. Burst mode is basically the number of pictures you can take per second. I'd rather not think about all the pictures I've missed using older point and shoot cameras with slow burst modes. The Canon weighs in here with a respectable 1.6 frames per second. Not bad at all for a camera in this category and price range. The DSCW80 however exceeds all expectations and clocks a remarkable 2.7 frames per second. Score one for Sony.

Image stabilization is another one of those new features whose time has come. Not necessarily new to photography in general, but certainly unheard of in ultra-compact cameras at this price range a few years ago. I was a little skeptical as to how good image stabilization (IS) could be in this type of camera. Then as they say, the proof is in the seeing. I took a look at a few side by side comparisons between pictures taken with and without IS at 1/5 seconds from the DSCW80. I was sold. Unfortunately for the SD1000, this feature is not available. Another plus for the Sony. I would however be remiss at this point if I did not mention the Canon A570IS, which is a slightly larger point and shoot for approximately the same price that does have IS. If your willing to go with a slightly bigger camera, it could be a good choice.

Our final important consideration is battery life. Both these cameras come with their own proprietary batter packs, so standard double AA batteries are not an option here. This is pretty common for the ultra-compact category of cameras. What is different here though, is the number of shots each camera can take before their battery pack dies. Again the Canon does a respectable job with 210 shots on one battery pack. And again, the Sony goes the extra mile and is able to shoot a far more respectable 340 pictures. One trick I often use on my point and shoots when batteries start to die, is to turn off the battery sucking LCD screen, and just use the view finder. This is especially useful for the Canon with a shorter battery life.

My one pet peeve with the Sony Cybershot DSCW80 (and all things Sony) is the use of their proprietary memory stick for storing pictures. Probably goes back to being stuck with a Betamax video player so many years ago. Don't even get me started on the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD fiasco. With the Canon, you can use the industry standard SD cards. Score one for Canon.

Well, for me this seems like a pretty simple decision between these two. The Sony DSCW80 seems to be the better machine in this case. Although don't forget to check out the Canon A570IS. Of course with digital camera technology changing so fast you may want to check on the latest batch of digital cameras coming out of the gate before making your final decision.

Never Buy A Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera

The Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera has been on a multitude of top ten lists and received numerous five star ratings. But, every camera has it's quirks and some of them can be quite glaring. Then Nikon D40 is no exception. They say there's no such thing as a bad camera, only bad photographers. I'd like to take that a bit further, and say that there's no such thing as a bad photographer, only good photographers using the wrong camera. So, let's be a little critical with the D40 SLR, and see if it's really the right camera for you.

The most obvious shortcoming of the Nikon D40 camera, is the absence of an autofocus driver in the camera body. What this means, is that if autofocus is important to the way you take pictures, they you are somewhat limited in the number of lenses you can use with the D40. Only about ten percent of the available lenses for the Nikon D40 have autofocus drives built into the lenses. Needless to say, those lenses are considerably more expensive than lenses without autofocus (upwards of $500 or more). Autofocus would be important to anyone shooting shots with lots of movement, such as sports or wildlife.

Nikon decided that a depth of field preview feature was not necessary for the D40. Depending on your preference for taking pictures, this may or may not be of concern. Some photographers find this very helpful, but others may just experiment with different aperture settings and figure out from that what stays in focus, and what doesn't. I would suggest, that someone learning photography could really benefit from a depth of field preview as it helps to teach the principles of objects in focus anddefocused.

One last small grievance. Most SLR's in this price range, allow you to take pictures in the RAW format, and the D40 is no exception. What is a bit surprising, is that when you take pictures with the RAW and JPEG format at the same time, the D40 only uses a very basic JPEG format. For a camera in this price range I would have expected better. Again, your photo taking preferences come into play here. If all you ever take is only RAW, or only JPEG format pictures, then don't concern yourself with this issue.

So, at this point you may still be convinced that the Nikon D40 SLR is still the best camera for you. That's fine, like I said earlier, it really depends on what is the right camera for you. It's hard to beat a good photographer with the right camera.

Excellent camera - very satisfied. I replaced an older Canon model (Power Shot A10) and left on month-long tour one week after I got the camera. Results were better than expected, for a strict 'point and shoot; don't bother me with the tech stuff' camera person. Good shots even of eagles in flight, snatching fish from river. My only concern is not great ability to predict battery life, although it does give adequate warning of Low Battery condition. I'd definitely buy it all over again.

Two years ago I purchased my first digital camera. At that time, prices for a 3.0 and higher mega pixel camera were around $350. Since then, as with all electronic gadgets, prices have dropped significantly while the mega pixels have gone up. I chose the Fujifilm's A303 digital camera, which has fared well for me, so permit me the opportunity to tell you why.

I desperately needed a digital camera when my web business took off. On many different occasions I found myself wanting to take a picture of a person, place or thing and having to rely on a 35mm camera. Trouble was I wasn't very good at taking pictures. Usually my subject came out blurry or the picture needed cropping. Yes, getting pictures developed on disk would have resolved the latter problem, but it was the former problem -- blurry pictures -- that was causing me the most grief. If only I could see "on the spot" how my picture turned out. If it turned out poorly, I could reshoot. Naturally, a digital camera presented to me something that no 35mm camera could offer; I made the purchase of a 3.2 mega pixel camera by Fujifilm after considerable shopping around and reading product reviews online.

Packed within a tough grey shell, the A303 is lightweight and can fit easily into your pant pockets. The camera's controls are simple to figure out and include a Menu/OK button, Back button, viewfinder, viewfinder lamp, a display buttion and LCD monitor to preview pictures without looking through the viewfinder or to review pictures already taken. A round dial in the back of the camera features a self timer mode where you can set the camera and ten seconds later have the picture go off. Great for when you want to get the entire family's picture and no one is around to take it. There are also close up modes, still image, playback and movie modes. The movie mode results in a fairly choppy and short film, but it is a neat feature to have nevertheless.

The standard camera comes equipped with a 16mb picture card. Most people will find that inadequate, so I paid a little bit extra and bought the 64mb upgrade. I also purchased rechargeable AA batteries -- it takes two -- and a recharger. You will sap your batteries quickly if you take 30-40 or more pictures at a time, so the recharger makes sense. I purchased the accompanying Fujifilm carrying case to house my other supplies.

Pictures come out clear and in two years of picture taking I have not experienced a single problem with the camera. At 3.2 mega pixels the pictures are more than adequate as virtually everything I do gets posted to the internet. Supposedly you do not need more mega pixels when posting/viewing pictures online. With the included USB cable and HP software, you will be uploading pictures to the internet in no time.

If there are any drawbacks with the A303 there is just one and it is a glaring problem: the time between shots can seem endless! I suppose the elapsed time is only about ten seconds, but it seems like an eternity especially compared to 35mm cameras. Technological improvements have closed the gap considerably with newer models, but if you need this camera to take a group of shots quickly you will be disappointed.

All in all, the A303 is a very good camera. I give it a 4-star rating for ease of use, price, and dependability.

4. Remember your focus. Get closer to your subject. Fill the frame with your subject and there will be no doubt as to what the picture is saying.

5. Never put your subject dead center. Put your just slightly off center; not a lot just a little. When you’re shooting groups of people, find the imaginary center line of your group and put that line just a bit off center in your view through your lens or screen.

Following these tips won’t turn you into an award-winning photographer today, but you will be on your way to better, more powerful photographs that others will comment on for years to come.

Paint Shop Pro also has a layering feature that lets you determine the relative opacity of either layer – that is, you can make a custom layer with a pattern of applied colors that have a tendency to correct the source artwork, and determine later how much influence this layer should have in the evolution of the final image.
